we knew it was a strength of governor romney. just showing up on the stage and, you know, he was going to come out of the debate like that. we knew that. he was too low. romney is always go to get 47 and 48 and 49 in states like virginia and florida and virginia. we were not go to win the first debate. he was the only person on that stage that had something to gain out of the first debate. but obviously we had a poor performance and he had a very strong performance. we said it publicly and most did not believe at the time. i think it is now the truth. the race did not fundamentally change. all of the things that happened is the gains governor romney would have made slowly over october, he would have kept gaining ground and the race would have gotten closer. he accelerated those games. they thought that they were go to win. but the structure of the race never really changed. the nine battle ground states that we identified. the nine battle ground states this year, we fought in all of them all throughout october. we had a much bett

he was so good at getting at governor romney and i thought performance wise i started worry. but once the governor gut and he saw this opportunity to cut through that was a talking point but also very true. so i think once he had that up there and he knew he had that opportunity to talk right to voters he took it and we saw the result. >> what do you think he'll do now >> i don't know. i know he'll spend some time with family. one of the things i was struck by was when we were on the plane one of the last few days i asked him. lot of the reporters as we get closer will trying to force questions upon you. what happens if you win or lose and don't think we ever really talked about you don't go through the brutality thinking your actually going to lose but being the press guy my job is to put him on the couch and prepare him for the questions. they're going to ask him. he said if i win i'm going to be excited because then i get to do all the things i've been talked about for the last six years and put my plan in action. if i lose i'll be excited because i goat go on with my life

i also remember calling up a guy before i worked for governor romney, i worked for john boehner. i called up our didge cal -- digital guy and said tell me about twitter and he said you don't need to know that. that is not going to take off. so much of what we did was driven from the bottom up through twitter. even when toivens plane, we would go -- even when i was on the plane, jen was on a much bigger plane called air force 1. i was on hairforce 1. by the time i came back to the front of the plane i would see on twitter i already made news. >> when you say people, you don't mean people. you mean reporters. >> or people. [laughter] >>that was on the -- free to be you and me c.d. reporters are people. but this was kind of backstage conversation you were watching play out on twitter. sometimes real people. it was more important for you how the journalists were using twitter. >> it became an incredible newsing a gator. you could see now like t.p.m. more left leaning. see what they are saying. see what folks on the right are saying. folks in the middle are supposed to be saying. what

i don't know who advised governor romney to say that. that was very early on in the primaries and i was a surrogate for governor romney and i did notice, and that he was moderating as he came in the general election in saying a lot of the right things and really understanding from an economic standpoint that this is a necessity. not something to tolerate but something to encourage and think about and to plan strategically. no question that statement of self-deportation came back to haunt the governor all the way to the last day of the again real legislation. because, and that's part of the problem that has been talked about is this crazy primary process where you have to run to the extreme right and say sometimes some very illogical and outrageous things to get nominated and then you have to run to the center to nominate your stance. the problem is everything is taped and people go back to what you said in the primaries and juxtapose that with the general election and it's a crazy system and the irony is, it is being controlled by what i
